United Nations Human Rights Council

Topic 1Freedom of Expression for Journalists & Media
Topic 2Refugee & Asylum Seeker Rights
01 · TOPIC OVERVIEW

The right to speak, the right to flee.

Journalists disappear. Refugees wait years at borders that were never meant to hold them. These are not new problems, but in 2026 they have a new urgency, as digital surveillance, armed conflict, and rising nationalism converge to push both issues to the edge of what the international system can absorb.

Delegates will navigate the tension between state sovereignty and universal rights, balancing the interests of media freedom advocates, host nations, and the displaced populations caught between them. Expect difficult compromises and coalitions that cut across traditional blocs.
